Albania’s Green Future: Clean energy and skills for a sustainable tomorrow
Albania is making big strides toward a greener and more sustainable future, focusing on both renewable energy and vocational education to prepare its workforce for the changes ahead.
A Boost in Clean Energy
One of the biggest recent developments is a €1 billion partnership between Italy, Albania, and the United Arab Emirates to expand renewable energy production. This agreement, signed in early 2025, will support the development of solar and wind power, helping Albania strengthen its energy sector and contribute to Europe’s clean energy goals. A key part of this project is an underwater cable that will send some of the electricity directly to Italy.
Another exciting project is the construction of a floating solar power plant on Vau i Dejës Lake. A joint effort between companies from China and Spain, this €13.5 million initiative will add nearly 13 MW of clean energy to Albania’s grid. It’s financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, along with support from the Albanian government and international donors.
These investments are crucial as Albania relies almost entirely on hydropower, which can be challenging during dry seasons. Expanding into solar and wind energy will help the country maintain energy stability while reducing environmental impact.
Preparing for the Green Jobs of the Future
Beyond investing in clean energy, Albania is also working hard to prepare its workforce for the future. The country is modernizing its vocational education and training (VET) system to ensure students gain the right skills for emerging green jobs.
Some of the key initiatives include:
- Updating school curricula to include sustainability and green energy training.
- Strengthening partnerships between businesses and schools to provide hands-on learning opportunities.
- Working with international organizations to improve training programs and ensure Albanian workers are ready for the future job market.
By investing in both clean energy and education, Albania is setting the stage for long-term economic growth and environmental sustainability. These efforts not only create new opportunities for businesses and workers but also position Albania as a key player in the region’s green transition.
The future is looking bright—and green—for Albania!
