{"id":14860,"date":"2020-04-08T08:48:05","date_gmt":"2020-04-08T08:48:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cci.al\/?p=14860"},"modified":"2020-04-08T08:48:08","modified_gmt":"2020-04-08T08:48:08","slug":"joint-statement-2-april-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cci.al\/en\/joint-statement-2-april-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"JOINT STATEMENT 2 April 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Heads of ICC <sup>1)<\/sup>\nand WTO call for increased action on trade to ensure an effective response to\nCOVID-19 pandemic and announce virtual business roundtable to provide concrete\nadvice to governments. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are profoundly saddened by the suffering and loss of\nlife the COVID-19 pandemic is causing around the world. This health crisis is\nalso becoming a social and economic crisis, and we support governments\u2019 efforts\nto mitigate the pandemic\u2019s effects on jobs and growth, and lay the foundations\nfor a strong and inclusive recovery. G20 leaders have clearly recognised the\nneed for the international community to step up global cooperation in response\nto this crisis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The business community is\u2014and will continue to be\u2014an\nimportant partner in this response. Trade and trade rules have a crucial role\nto play in both the health and economic response to the crisis. We welcome the\nG20\u2019s endorsement of this view, including their assertion that any\npandemic-related trade measures should be \u201ctargeted, proportionate,\ntransparent, and temporary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;We also underscore\nthe importance of \u201cactively working to ensure the flow of vital medical\nsupplies, critical agricultural products, and other goods and services across\nborders,\u201d as well as the G20\u2019s broader commitment to \u201cminimise disruptions to\ntrade and global supply chains\u201d. We deeply share the G20\u2019s concern about the\nimpact of the pandemic on the most vulnerable, including developing and least\ndeveloped countries, and on workers and businesses, including micro-, small-,\nand medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are concerned about the severe disruptions to value\nchains in many sectors\u2014with major implications for employment and the supply of\ngoods, especially essential medical and food supplies. Bold and urgent\nleadership is required to keep trade moving and to secure jobs. Now is the time\nfor concrete measures to respond to the economic dimensions of the pandemics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Business can play a key role in signalling where trade\nflows and production chains are being affected, helping to identify solutions\nthat maximize health outcomes while minimising economic damage. It is\nincreasingly clear that the economic downturn caused by the pandemic will\nnecessitate a significant rebuild of domestic policies\u2014and of international\ncooperation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this time of uncertainty, leadership requires not only\nresponding to the crisis at hand but providing a clear vision for the future.\nOn-going efforts to improve and strengthen the global trading system, including\nthe WTO, must therefore continue. With a view to providing additional concrete\nbusiness recommendations to governments, ICC will work with its partners,\nsupported by the WTO, to host an extraordinary virtual business roundtable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This virtual session will look to provide constructive\nrecommendations to governments on trade policy measures that can be readily\ndeployed to speed the response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the immediate and\nmid-term. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1) The International Chamber of\nCommerce is the institutional representative of over 45 million businesses.\nICC\u2019s recommendations on trade policy and post-pandemic rebuilding were sent to\ngovernments and international agencies in a 28 March letter available here. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wto.org\">www.wto.org<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Heads of ICC 1) and WTO call for increased action on trade to ensure an effective response to COVID-19 pandemic and announce virtual business roundtable to provide concrete advice to governments.
